This post details the 3 key takeaways from the 4th webinar in Empowering Women in AI webinar series titled “The Impact of AI on Media Production and Consumption” that was held on March 19th, 2025 at 14:00 to 15:00 CET. The Empowering Women in AI webinar series is produced by Connected Women in AI in collaboration with our partners at DTU Skylab, Tuborgfondet and Venzo.

The discussion offered a nuanced exploration of innovation, ethics, and practical implications shaping the future narrative of storytelling and content consumption.

The Cinematic Renaissance: AI’s Role in Modern Filmmaking

  • Deepfake Technologies: Originally met with skepticism, deepfakes have transitioned into invaluable filmmaking tools. They enable visually authentic historical recreations, seamless actor replacements, and cost-effective visual enhancements without relying heavily on traditional CGI methods.
  • Generative AI Innovations: Scripts and storyboards generated by AI stimulate creativity, fostering unprecedented narrative explorations and artistic experimentation. Filmmakers now rapidly prototype ideas, enhancing storytelling dynamics.
  • ML-Enhanced Editing: Machine learning optimizes essential filmmaking processes—from sophisticated color grading to intricate sound design and structured narrative editing—drastically reducing production timelines while enhancing creative quality.
  • Personalized Viewer Experiences: AI-driven algorithms personalize content discovery and viewing experiences, reshaping consumer expectations and redefining distribution strategies.

Ethics and Equity: Lessons from Algorithmic Decision-Making

Tess S. Skadegård Thorsen, Ph.D. offered compelling insights through their policy brief, “Algorithmic Fairness: Learnings from a Case That Used AI for Decision Support.” This presentation illuminated critical ethical considerations, especially around fairness and accountability in algorithm-driven public systems.

Navigating Journalism’s New Frontier: Trust, Efficiency, and Accuracy

Our expert panel also addressed the delicate balance required in journalism amid rising AI integration:

  • Trust versus Skepticism: Embracing AI-generated insights cautiously, maintaining a critical stance to safeguard reliability and credibility.
  • Efficiency and Thoroughness: Balancing AI’s efficiency in automating routine tasks with rigorous scrutiny to ensure detailed investigative work is uncompromised.
  • Innovative Insights and Human Expertise: Harnessing AI’s capability to uncover fresh perspectives while reinforcing the irreplaceable depth offered by human intuition, expert analysis, and historical context.
